The Creighton Prep Varsity beat the Burke Bulldogs 15-5 Wednesday evening March 23 in a game played at Burke Stadium under windy, rainy and sometimes icy conditions. Prep scorers were led by RJ Moffatt (4 goals and 1 assist), Carson Johnson (3 goals and 1 assist) and Mark Mausbach (1 goal and 2 assists). Both Mitch Rhoades and Dante Dovali added a pair of goals, while Mayson Marus, Brennan Kelley and Grant Shepherd each added a goal apiece. The Junior Jay defense was led by Eddie Johnson (4 ground balls), Charlie Johnson (4 ground balls), Max Peterson (4 ground balls), Leo Dunlap (4 ground balls) and Zac Boyer (3 ground balls). Junior Jay Goalie Sam Johnson was credited with 12 saves.
Both of the first two varsity games were played in extreme conditions. The Westside game contained every weather pattern. The game started off clear but the weather soon turned to alternating between rain and snow several times. By the third quarter, white out conditions developed which required switching the white lacrosse balls to orange balls in order to see the ball during the snow showers. The game ended with the weather again breaking out to clear conditions. The sun even came back out during the JV White game that followed the varsity.
The Burke game was cold. The rain held off until late third quarter and then came down as frozen pellets. The weather was spotty all day and Coach Haney received emails all-day about whether the game would be played.
Coach Haney noted that the weather was not helpful to possessing the ball. Wet conditions also made the passing and shooting difficult. “We had a lot of easy passes that did not connect due to the weather, but that is March Lacrosse in Nebraska for you. We will end in May with temperatures in the 90’s so we will need to be ready for the heat in a few months too,” said Coach Haney.
This improves the Junior Jays' record to 2-0. Next up for the Junior Jays: Elkhorn South Storm at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, March 29 at Elkhorn Middle School.
