The Junior Jay Varsity beat the Knights of Sarpy County 16-3 on Friday night May 25th to start off the Holiday Weekend. On a hot and muggy night, the Junior Jays started slowly to take 4-1 lead at the 1st quarter break. At the half, the score was 9-1. At the 3rd quarter break, the score was 13-2, leading to a final score of 16-3. “It seems that deep grass is a way to slow us down. We like the turf fields so that we can run in transition. We were a bit off for the fast breaks all night” stated Coach Haney.
The defense seemed to pick up a few injuries. Peter Wessling went down in the first half but was able to return to the game. Leo Dunlap injured his knee and was held out of the rest of the game as a precaution. “Leo and Peter both tried to get back in the game within minutes of coming off the field with injuries. They are both warriors and want to play as much as possible” stated Coach Grosskurth.
The Junior Jays did an excellent job of staying out of the penalty box. “We cleaned up that area of our game tonight. We had no unsportsmanlike penalties. We earned four trips for 4:30 to the penalty box to Sarpy’s five penalties for 9:00 minutes. I will take that any day” added Coach Haney
The Junior Jay scorers were led by RJ Moffatt (6 goals), Mark Mausbach (4 goals and 3 assists), Paul Gordon (2 goals and 1 assist) Jack Mausbach (1 goal and 2 assists). Other Jays that added a goal were Tyler Varney, Max King, and Mac Nelson. Junior Jays that passed out assists were Bob Lawton with 2 assists and Nate Meier with an assist. The Jays Defense was lead by Matthew Buckley (4 ground balls), Peter Wessling (2 ground balls), Leo Dunlap (2 ground balls), Ben Newell (2 ground balls) Ethan Kilstorm (1 ground ball) Ian Keyser (1 ground ball) Owen Watts (1 ground ball), Cameron Kozol (1 ground ball). “The Silent Assassins were also Ground Ball Kings tonight. With the deep grass making it tough to get the balls on the first pass, we fought hard to secure a ton of ground balls” said Coach Grosskurth. Jack Abt had a strong showing in goal with five saves.
The win improves the Junior Jays to 12-0 for the season and 10-0 in NELAX play. The Junior Jays finished their second straight undefeated regular season. Next up for the Junior Jays will be the winner of the playin game between the Sarpy Knights or the Millard Cobras for the 8th seed spot in Quarter final play down in Lincoln on May 31st.
